The Sony VAIO E15 is as stylish a mainstream laptop as you're likely to find. Starting at only $500 with a 15.5-inch screen and state-of-the-art ports and connectivity, it's an inexpensive way to impress your fellow humans with your astute judgment of things computing, as well as your fine taste in design.

Though inexpensive in its least formidable configuration--which sports an Intel Pentium B970 CPU--the VAIO E15 may be configured with faster stuff up to about $1350 (Core i7). Our "nicely configured" $700 test unit has a Core i5-3210M CPU, 6GB of system memory, a CD/DVD burner, and a 5400-rpm, 750GB hard drive. Options include a Blu-ray player, but sadly, no 7200-rpm hard drives or SSDs.

It is most likely the slowish hard drive that held the E15 in check during our testing and hands-on. As the chart below suggests, a WorldBench 7 score of 87 is a little below average even for an affordable laptop, and its subjective feel (the speed of menus and windows opening, icons being drawn, and so on) is slightly sluggish until Windows has cached icons and the like. On the other hand, 1080p video plays very smoothly, and sound through the speakers is more sonorous than with most laptops, which is to say, it's not grating. The 1.3-megapixel webcam gives a nice image as well.

Gaming frame rates delivered by the integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics are generally playable up to the 15.5-inch display's maximum 1366 by 768 resolution, but only in low detail; tougher games will require you to knock said resolution down a notch or two. The AMD Radeon HD 7550M discrete GPU that's available for either $100 (1GB of dedicated memory) or $150 (2GB of memory) will improve frame rates tremendously.

At 14.65 inches wide, 1.3 inches high, and 10 inches deep the VAIO E15 is a midsize laptop in every respect. It travels at 6.3 pounds (that includes the 0.9-pound AC adapter), and run time is an acceptable 4 hours, 14 minutes with the standard 4000mAh battery. You can increase that considerably (along with the weight) with the 5300mAh ($20) or 7950mAh ($100) batteries.

Ports on the VAIO E15 are a modern mix and include a single always-on USB 3.0 port, three USB 2.0 ports, and VGA and HDMI outputs, as well as a Kensington lock port, headphone and microphone jacks, and a gigabit ethernet port. Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi round out the connectivity, and the front has SD and Memory Stick ProDuo card slots.

The backlit, Chiclet-style keyboard recessed into the upper deck of the VAIO E15 is large, covering nearly the entire width of the laptop. The spacing and layout are top-notch, including the 10-key numeric keypad, though Sony has yet to emulate the magical "feel" of a Lenovo laptop. It's easy to set up a typing rhythm on the E15's keyboard, but the short key travel is apparent, and you'll never feel quite as secure on it as with a Lenovo.

The one-piece rocker touchpad is responsive, perhaps too much so. I had a difficult time avoiding accidental taps and had to turn the feature off. Less clumsy individuals will probably be fine. Design flourishes include an Assist button that turns on the laptop and initiates the software recovery software, a Web button that does the same but with Windows and your favorite browser, and the Vaio button that launches the application of your choice.

Sony loves to load software onto its laptops. Some of it is useful, powerful, and/or necessary such as the Arcsoft Webcam Suite, Cyberlink PowerDVD, and Sony's own ACID, Sound Forge Audio Studio, and Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11. A lot of it such as the VAIO Gate launch application, VAIO Messenger, and VAIO Smart Network look nice but are really there to remind you which company's laptop you bought. Ditch the applets that duplicate functionality already present in the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system (Windows 7 Pro is an option), and it's remarkable how much quicker the E15 responds.

Sony's laptops are always more than the sum of their parts--a sense of style will do that for you. The VAIO E15 is no exception and will undoubtedly turn a lot of heads in the major electronics outlets. It's a great unit overall. Still, it would be even better if Sony offered a faster hard drive option.

21% of iOS users say they wouldn't leave Apple at any price

Published: 03:24 PM EST (12:24 PM PST) iPhone and iPad users are so loyal to Apple and unlikely to switch to another platform that one analyst has pegged their total collective value at nearly $295 billion.

Bill Shope with Goldman Sachs said in a note to investors on Friday that he believes the average single iOS customer is worth $1,053. That assumes the average selling price of an iOS device for the June quarter is $535 with 5 percent erosion, gross margin is 45 percent, and annual defections are 5 percent.

"This implies a cumulative iOS customer value of nearly $295 billion on today's installed base, without any consideration for the content, services or peripherals streams, or for the platform's growth potential," Shope wrote.

At a value of $295 billion, iOS customers represent about 55 percent of Apple's current market cap. That's before including the company's $110 billion cash balance, an iOS install base that continues to grow at a tremendous pace, or the value of the company's Mac and iPod businesses.

Goldman Sachs recently conducted a consumer survey of over 1,000 respondents, in an effort to better understand the costs that customers face when they switch platforms.

The survey found that 21 percent of respondents said no discount, regardless of the amount, would make it worthwhile to leave Apple's platform. Among those who said they would consider switching, more than half of those said they would need a discount greater than 30 percent.

Among those polled, 71 percent said they are "highly likely" to choose an Apple device for their next tablet or smartphone purchase. Another 23 percent are "likely" to stick with Apple's ecosystem, while only 1 percent were "unlikely" to stick with Apple.

Switching costs for customers only grow when they own more than one device in the Apple ecosystem, and the new iCloud service adds yet another layer to the switching costs, Shope said. Among those polled by Goldman Sachs, 30 percent said they are paying for extra storage capacity or iTunes Match with iCloud.

"Considering that apple has disclosed that it has 120 million iCloud users as of its earnings release on April 24, this is quickly becoming yet another high-margin revenue stream for the company," Shope said. "More important, however, this also suggests that a large portion of Apple's installed base is adding yet another source of explicit switching costs."

In all, he estimates that the switching cost per iOS user ranges between $122 and $301. That implies the average user would need a discount of 49 percent to switch to a competing platform.

NATO may not know the final result of its intervention in Afghanistan, but it now has an exit plan. And the exit will take place through Central Asia, the same route the Soviet troops took after their withdrawal in 1988 and 1989.

As relations worsen between the United States and Pakistan, NATO has signed deals with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan (see map here) to move out the tons of equipment that must be withdrawn by 2014, when NATO makes its final exit from Afghanistan.

Speaking with Agence France-Presse news agency, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that NATO now considers Central Asia and its Russian-built roads to be the most expedient route out of Afghanistan. ?

"These agreements will give us a range of new options and the robust and flexible transport network we need," Mr. Rasmussen said.

Tarnished by more than a decade of war, mutual recriminations, and foreign policy goals that are increasingly at odds, the US-Pakistani relationship now has reached a nadir. From the early post 9/11 days, when NATO received 90 percent of its supplies for the Afghan war through the Pakistani port of Karachi, now Pakistan has cut off NATO?s old supply routes. Last November, Pakistan banned NATO?s use of Pakistani territory after NATO planes mistakenly bombed a Pakistani post, killing 24 Pakistani soldiers.

For Pakistan, the NATO bombing was the last straw, following the violation of its territorial sovereignty last year when US Navy SEALs captured and killed Osama bin Laden in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad.

Native Firefox Android browser adds speed, Flash, HTML5 and a fresh look (hands-on)

After a brief stretch in beta followed by some vague teasing, Firefox's native Android app is finally set to hit Google Play. While there are a raft of other bells and whistles -- a new welcome page, curvy Australis tabs, Flash and HTML5 support, for starters -- the company is giving the browser's newfound speed the MVP treatment. That rapidity is as good a place as any to start a quick hands-on, especially since the native browser lag on our older Galaxy S handset often makes us want to hurl it through a pane of glass. Mozilla claims it built Firefox to a new benchmark it developed called Eideticker, resulting in an overall browser experience twice as fast as the stock Android one. As advertised, initial loading is quasi-instant, and navigation, zooming and tab switching seemed smooth as well, even on the two-gen old phone.

Feature-wise, preferences and other desktop settings imported easily with Firefox Sync's shared password system, and the unfortunately named "Awesome Page" is the new home screen shown above, from which it's fairly simple to launch your preferred sites. Flash and HTML5 generally displayed correctly despite a few minor rendering bugs, and appearance-wise, the curved tabs and other design touches make it one of the more elegant Android browsers we've played with. We were disappointed that the browser didn't detect and display mobile sites by default, but the installation of the Phony 3.2 add-in allows mobile site detection based on the criteria of various android browsers. We also didn't like that tabbed browsing now requires two taps, unlike the previous version, but we imagine that the new system was necessary to bump the speed up. NJ Assembly approves social media protections

TRENTON, N.J.?? Two measures aimed at stopping employers and schools from asking for social media passwords have been approved by the New Jersey Assembly.

Lawmakers voted 75-0 on Monday for the school-related protections and 77-0 for the employee-related measure.

The bills would prohibit employers, colleges and universities from requiring current or prospective employees or students to disclose user names or passwords for social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. They also would prohibit asking them if they have an account on a social media or networking site.

Business groups have expressed concern about the measures leading to expensive lawsuits. They also want exceptions for investigating claims against employees, like insider trading or sexual harassment.

The Senate has not yet considered the measures.

The Higgs has been theorized for years, but never found. Humanity's best hope of discovering the particle lies in the?humongous atom smasher?buried underneath Switzerland and France called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). There, physicists collide protons head-on to create explosions that give rise to new, exotic particles, including, maybe, the Higgs.

LHC researchers plan to share their latest findings at the International Conference on High Energy Physics (ICHEP) in Melbourne, Australia, from July 4-11.

In December of last year, LHC scientists at the machine's home facility, the CERN physics laboratory in Geneva, reported they'd seen?hints of what could be the Higgs boson?in an excess of particles weighing about 124 or 125 gigaelectronvolts, or GeV, a unit roughly equivalent to the mass of a proton. However, the physicists hadn't accumulated enough data to announce a discovery, which in science requires a certain level of statistical significance called "five sigma."

Experts say it's still unlikely the LHC researchers have reached the five-sigma level yet, but they have collected substantially more data since their last public announcement. [Top 5 Implications of Finding the Higgs Boson]

"They will have quite a bit more data now, but the analysis is still ongoing," said CERN press officer Renilde Vanden Broeck. "So we will have to wait and see."

The findings reported so far have been called "tantalizing hints" of the Higgs' existence by LHC physicists, but it remains possible that the signal researchers see is merely a statistical fluke.

"This is science," Vanden Broeck told LiveScience. "They are not going to announce a discovery until they are absolutely sure, when it's a real five-sigma."

And if the signal does come through more strongly in the new data, it will still take some investigation to determine if it represents the Higgs boson or something else even more exotic.

One of the things the family brings up in the tome is Kody's past -- specifically, how he had a lot of girlfriends in high school. Some might say that's not particularly surprising, considering he now has four wives. (He's legally married to only his first wife, Meri.)

In a clip from TLC, Kody explained the girlfriend tidbit to his host, saying that when he was 14, he was trying to figure out his life as a wild boy and answering his calling to be a spiritual person.

Natalie's response? "So it wasn't that you chose religion to be a womanizer?"

After a stunned silence, Kody replied, "Is that what you think I am, a womanizer?" He went on to defend himself and his family, insisting that he had "done the emotional work" in his relationships with his wives, and "shouldered their needs as much as I could." And also, "I was never womanizing. ... This is NOT an open marriage," he insisted.

N. Zealand's 'night parrot' brought back from the brink

Flightless, slow-moving and at times more sexually attracted to humans than their own species, it's small wonder New Zealand's kakapo parrot is on the verge of extinction.

But a mammoth conservation effort stretching back decades is offering hope for one of the world's rarest birds, lifting its numbers from about 50 in 1990 to 126 this year.

The plump, green kakapo -- the name means "night parrot" in Maori -- was once one of the most common birds in New Zealand, which had few land predators before European settlement in the early Nineteenth Century.

"There was a report from an early explorer, Charles Douglas, who said they were so populous you could shake them out of trees like apples," said Deirdre Vercoe Scott, head of the Department of Conservation's kakapo recovery program.

"He said he'd once seen six kakapo shaken from a single tutu bush."

Vercoe Scott said habitat destruction by humans and the introduction of pests such as stoats and predatory cats and dogs, sowed the seeds of the kakapos' decline.

The flightless nocturnal birds, while essentially ground dwelling, are strong climbers but freeze when confronted by a threat, making them easy pickings for predators.

The males also attract mates by emitting a deep booming sound from thoracic air sacs, turning them into conspicuous targets for hunters in the night forest.

With an aging population and bird numbers declining, kakapo recovery program chief scientist Ron Moorehouse said the species' future appeared "dire" in the 1990s.

The situation sparked an intense conservation initiative, which has cost tens of millions of dollars, to save a bird that those who have encountered it describe as endearing and full of personality.

"They can be quite grumpy," ranger Sarah Kivi said. "They display so much personality, which I guess you don't get from a lot of birds. They'll sit there and look at you and you wonder 'what are they thinking?'"

Exacerbating the problem was the fact that kakapo, which can live up to 90 years, are notoriously slow breeders, only reproducing in seasons when abundant fruit is available from native tree species.

The breeding program faced another hurdle when male kakapo became "imprinted" on their human handlers, meaning they saw them as more likely potential mates than female kakapo.

In the early days of the conservation effort, rangers even wore an outlandish rubber helmet dotted with dimples in an unsuccessful attempt to collect kakapo sperm when males tried to mate with their heads.

British actor Stephen Fry witnessed the kakapo's amorous antics first hand while filming his program "Last Chance to See" in 2009, when a kakapo named Sirocco took a shine to zoologist Mark Carwardine and began vigorously coupling with his scalp.

The resulting footage, which Fry described as "one of the funniest things I've ever seen", attracted almost four million hits on video-sharing website YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T1vfsHYiKY.

Vercoe Scott said the birds' fortunes began to improve when they were moved to two remote islands where existing pests had been eliminated and which predators from the mainland could not reach by swimming.

"The biggest breakthrough was putting all the birds together on predator-free islands and understanding how they breed while getting over (our) fear of intervening," she said.

"If we'd taken a hands-off policy we would have lost the kakapo, so we really had to get in there and be quite intense with our management, particularly during the nesting period."

She added that her team set up cameras, weighed the chicks nightly and as a result hand reared many of the birds.

Vercoe Scott said it was highly unlikely any kakapo now survived in the wild, meaning only the conservation programme could save the species.

Such has been its success that rangers this year re-introduced eight kakapo to a third sanctuary, Little Barrier Island off the Auckland coast, after eliminating a rat infestation which forced their removal in 1999.

Moorehouse said some of the eight birds originally came from the island and immediately returned to their old nesting spots, raising hopes they will quickly settle in and breed in the new environment.

While the kakapo is still listed as critically endangered, Moorehouse said the situation no longer looked bleak.

"The trend is up, so we're encouraged by that," he said.

"We're certainly more comfortable, but with 126 birds you have to manage the genetics very carefully and that's what we're trying to do, so we retain as much genetic variation in the population as we can.

"So we're not out of the woods by any means but we're going in the right direction."

Cash cows, disputes explain UN development summit

RIO CLARO, Brazil (AP) ? The cash cows on Carlos Marques' farm used to be nothing but that: herds of dairy cattle that grazed the grassy, rolling hills of his property, where most of the dense tropical forest was long ago cut down for pastures and cropland.

But now the trees are starting to put money in his pocket as well.

The 68-year-old farmer is part of a pilot project that aims to reverse the economics of environmental destruction by paying farmers to preserve the forests that protect a crucial watershed, using money from some of the millions of people who use that water.

It's the sort of initiative that is at the heart of the United Nations' Rio+20 earth summit, the three-day mega-conference that ends Friday and is aimed at pushing sustainable development to the top of the world's agenda.

"It used to be that the forest was worth nothing," said Fernando Veiga, water funds manager at The Nature Conservancy, the environmental organization that helped spearhead the Rio Claro-area project along with a Brazilian NGO and the state and municipal governments. "But we know how crucial living trees are to the planet, and now they have a monetary value."

Proponents insist that sustainable development ? which allows economic growth to meet people's current needs while preserving natural resources for the future ? is the only way to prevent an environmental meltdown that could prove catastrophic for the planet and humanity.

But critics contend that the idea often serves as a front that permits governments and companies to make noise about protecting the environment while permitting business to continue as usual.

Looking out onto rounded hills that surround Marques' farm near the tiny town of Rio Claro, 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of Rio de Janeiro, it's hard to believe this entire region was once swathed in dense vegetation. Devastated by centuries of deforestation ? first for coffee plantations, then for charcoal and now for cattle raising and urban sprawl ? Brazil's Atlantic Forest has been whittled down to just 12 percent of its original size, and scientists say it ranks among the world's most threatened ecosystems.

The hills around Rio Claro are now almost bald, with just a sparse covering of grass that's often chewed down to the root by the rangy cattle that graze here. With little to anchor the earth into place, erosion has cut vivid gashes of rusty red soil.

This desolate landscape is the source for the Guandu River, which provides 80 percent of Rio's water. Because of deforestation and erosion, water is less abundant than locals say it once was, and silt from the erosion and other pollutants seep into the tributaries of the Guandu, as well as the river itself. That forces water officials to heavily treat the water to make it usable, costing the city $500 million per year, according to environmentalists. And still, most Rio residents who can afford it drink bottled water.

On Marques' property, for example, the brook that once babbled its way across his land had dried up, as have many other other streams in the area, the farmer said.

The Nature Conservancy and partner organization Instituto Terra developed the Guandu Water Fund to protect Rio's water supply by investing in the forests that help generate the water itself.

Under the pilot project, inaugurated in 2009, $500,000 in fees paid by big water consumers are being doled out to small farmers around Rio Claro who pledge to conserve their forests or allow swaths of their land to be reforested.

Farmers sign a contract promising to keep their animals out of protected plots, and organizers send out teams of locally hired employees to fence in the areas and plant thousands of saplings from a potpourri of some 80 native plant species.

The payouts are mostly small ? Marques receives just $640 a year for his 62 protected acres ? but advocates say even symbolic amounts help change people's attitudes toward conservation.

"I used to think of the trees as mine, to use as I saw fit, but now I see things differently," said Marques, a father of five and grandfather of five. "The trees that grow here are mine, but lots of other people depend on them, too, so by saving even just one single tree, I'm performing a service for all of humanity."

Since he joined the project three years ago, the dried-up stream has been resuscitated. At first it was a mere trickle, he said, but now it's grown into a thick rope of water.

With real, measurable gains for 9 million consumers in Rio de Janeiro, for the forest and for the locals who call it their home, the Guandu Water Fund embodies the win-win situation for people and the environment that sustainable development aspires to be.

Such initiatives are gaining traction among policymakers as a way to slow the kind of wholesale environmental destruction that has been blamed for recent years' rise in devastating droughts, floods and other natural disasters.

The notion of sustainable development was born well ahead of the current conference's precursor, the U.N.'s 1992 Earth Summit, which helped put climate change on the world agenda. Still, it remains an amorphous, and divisive, concept.

"Definitions of just what is sustainable development vary, society by society," said Jeffrey Sachs, the economist and who heads Columbia University's Earth Institute. "But while there are big debates about the specifics and how to balance ... the economy, the environmental and the social concern, I think that the basic idea that we have three bottom lines, not one, is the most important idea."

Still, it has been hard to agree on how to implement it.

Weeks of bickering between rich and poor countries delayed agreement on the final summit conclusions and the result has disappointed environmental groups, who have lambasted it as toothless and inadequate.

"What most people at the summit are talking about when they talk about sustainable development is nothing but business as usual under a different name, something that will deliver misery to many and profit to a few," said Daniel Mittler, a political director at Greenpeace who is heading the environmental group's delegation at Rio+20.

"But it doesn't have to be: Sustainability is an agenda that can deliver for people and the planet at the same time," Mittler said, adding that political will and direction are needed to make it work on a global scale. "The tragedy of Rio+20 is that governments are failing to grasp that opportunity."

While decision makers squabble over language, farmer Marques in Rio Claro says he's sold on sustainable development.

"I need money to live, but I also need clean air and clean water," he said. "This project gives me all three at the same time."
