How You Can Begin A Effective Online Small Business

You must make a decision as to how much you will charge for your merchandise. You have to figure in the cost of the product in order to know how much you will make from selling your product. A general rule of thumb is to double the price it costs to produce. This is the standard wholesale rate for most goods. To determine the retail price, you should figure: COST X 3.

What type of company do you uncover most eye-catching? Think of your talents, desires, interests and targets. For instance, you may mix your interests in music gear and carpentry into a speaker cabinet manufacturing business enterprise. What exactly is most important, is the fact that you definitely delight in what you do. The a lot more passion you really feel, the much more prosperous it is possible to turn into along with your entrepreneur ideas, for more incentives http://le-g.com/.

Write a business objective. It needs to be short and concise but should thoroughly describe what your business is going to do. Be sure to keep this idea in mind, especially when you talk to someone about your company. This will help you sound confident when you are talking about your company, and this confidence will be apparent to your customers.

Seek strength in numbers by joining an online forum comprised of members that are home business owners just like you. There are countless forums and websites dedicated to the owners of home businesses, and the information and support that can be gained there can be invaluable. You will find many sympathetic ears in these forums, and they are normally happy to provide you with their proven suggestions to help you with any issues.

If appropriate, one way to earn profits is through membership fees. Subscribers will provide a steady stream of income on a regular basis and it is not difficult to figure out a way to integrate this profit model into your website.

Start a daycare, open a local delivery service, offer landscaping help, or even create a new grocery buying/delivering business. Find a service that you can offer that makes other people's lives easier and is in demand.

You should be honest and realistic about your expectations with your online business. Is your product excellent, and will it continue to gather interest? Do you have good business ethics?

Always save receipts if you work for your business through home. When you own a business, everything that you use for business, including costs for vehicles, is tax deductible. File all your receipts. When tax time rolls around you can determine which are eligible. If you fail to save these items you might burden yourself with more tax than you need.

Treat your clients to meals and entertainment, and you may receive tax breaks. The expense of taking clients out for meals can be used as a tax deduction. It is crucial that you keep the receipts from these dinners for proof.

Keep all of the contracts you make with your clients together, so that they are easily accessible in case of a dispute. Keep your phone and internet contracts in the same location in case you need to argue with these companies over their service.

Banner pages can be a valuable tool for your business website. This will enable you to swap banner links with different webmasters that you know. This will make your website easier to find by customers because it will improve your ratings with search engines.

Find out what people are saying about your business, product, and website. Do some research to find out what others have to say. You can ask others, read reviews and look at customer feedback. This feedback, whether negative or positive, will give you priceless insight on moving your business to where you want it to be.

If you want to save money, your business expenditures must be documented. Included business expenses are things such as Internet service and car mileage related to your work. You can receive tax deductions for many of these expenses. Small things can add up, so make sure you ferret out all the deductions you can.

It's very easy to immerse yourself within work when you work from home. You need to have a designated area where you run your business and have an area in your house that is spent just for family and friends.

When you are working, make sure your friends and family know that they should not bother you. Politely inform uninvited or early guests that you must finish your work. If you have an unexpected visitor while you are working, ask them to sit in a different room and watch a little tv or read a magazine, while you finish up what you are doing.

If you can, try and increase your income by establishing membership fees. Your site could probably set up a membership subscription to increase your profits.

Define a specific spot in your home for use as a work space. Make sure that your work space has room to organize the supplies you need. You will become more focused by doing so. Organization is one of the most important aspects of a home business.

Only log into social media sites during the day to post messages and other content that promotes your business, and save the socializing for later. These sites can cause you to waste much of your day getting caught up in things that will not help your business. Socialize at a more appropriate time, like after work.

Very first you'll want to explore the kind of business which would appeal to you most. Assess your targets, interests, and capabilities. The most vital aspect is the fact that you will need to appreciate what you're performing day in and day out. Productive entrepreneurs are the ones who feel passionate concerning the small business they personal. An entrepreneur cannot feel passionate and driven to good results if they do not appreciate what they do!

As you can see, it will require a little bit of work and dedication to make the jump. If you can manage to pull through and stick to the plan, you will be able to accurately represent your dream in the company's image and create something that is long-lasting and profitable over the years

Good Commercial Real Estate Tips And Tricks - Maynas Eric

Commercial property ownership is an exciting endeavor, but you must put in time and effort to be successful. Because of this, it may be really hard to figure out how to get started and what to do in order to ensure that the venture runs smoothly. It can be hard to make sure you know everything about commercial property, but the more you know, the better, and this article is a good place to start.

Feng Shui

Learn the basics of feng shui, and apply it when investing in commercial property, and also apply it in your own office. A space that is open and not cluttered is one of the principles id feng shui that buyers like.

TIP! Before signing the paperwork to lease a commercial property, check the lease form. The largest real estate companies are known to fill their lease documentation with wordy clauses including hidden requirements.

Transactions for commercial property take more time, and are a lot more complex, than the process of buying a home. Know that the duration and intensity is essential to getting a higher return on the investment you made.

Size is highly important when you are searching for space for your growing business. Purchasing a larger space that can accommodate growth ensures that you are not forced to repeat the shopping process in the near future.

Take tours of any properties that you?re considering. Consider taking a professional contractor along with you as you look over the properties that you consider buying. Use what you see in these tours to determine a fair opening offer. Make sure you evaluate any counteroffers well enough before you make any purchasing decisions.

TIP! When you lease a commercial site it is very important to that pest control is kept up-to-date. If the area that you are renting in is known for pest infestations, it is especially important for you to talk to your rental agency about their policies for pest control.

In the earliest stages of negotiating your lease, it is in your best interest to ensure that only a few conditions are capable of constituting acceptable means of default. This can decrease the chances of tenants defaulting on that lease. This is a bad thing, so do what you can to minimize the chance of it happening.

Always include emergency maintenance on your list of need to know things. The landlord in the building where you have your office will be able to provide emergency repair contact information for you. It is important to keep these contact phone numbers handy and to have a good understanding of how long it will take for them to respond if needed. Use the information from your landlord to prepare an emergency plan to protect your reputation and customer service for the times when your normal business flow is disrupted.

The area in which the property is located is important. Purchasing a property in a neighborhood that is filled with well-to-do potential clients will give you a lot better chance of becoming well-to-do yourself! If your product or service tends to appeal primarily to lower or middle class consumers, look for commercial property in a more conservative neighborhood.

TIP! For a commercial property you plan to rent out, make sure it is a solid construction with a simple design. These buildings give off an appearance of being well-maintained and are more inviting to potential tenants.

Always ask how a broker negotiates, before hiring him or her. Discuss each potential broker?s experience and relevant education with him before hiring a broker. Also make sure they?re ethical when doing business and can get you the best deals. Ask them to show you examples of past negotiations, both successful and unsuccessful.

If you are investing in commercial properties, keep an eye out for any possibilities of buying bigger. Often, it is equally expensive to maintain either a small or large property. As a result, you are able to achieve an economy of scale.

Ask any potential broker about what experience they have had with commercial property before choosing someone to represent your interests. Make sure you know that they actually specialize within the area you plan on selling and buying. Make sure you find an exclusive agreement that works for you and your broker.

TIP! A letter of intent should be kept simple by focusing on larger issues and leaving smaller issues to negotiate later. This will diffuse tension during negotiations and will facilitate compromise on the minor issues.

It is important to be aware of all of the environmental issues and obligations related to your property. One huge concern is when the property you currently own has problems with hazardous waste materials. When these issues arise, the burden ultimately falls on the property manager to solve them, regardless of who is responsible for having caused the issues.

Take plenty of pictures of the building. Make sure your pictures clearly show any damage or defects, including carpet stains, holes in the walls or discoloration of plumbing and counter tops.

Learn how the firm you?re thinking about hiring measures their results. See how they go about determining the proper amount of space, property selection criteria, how they negotiate and other important details that will help you make a good decision. Knowing how a firm works before entrusting your investment to them is a very good idea.

TIP! You can find different kinds of brokers. Some brokers represent tenants only, while full service brokers will work with landlords and tenants.

Real Estate Broker

In order to find a reputable real estate broker who is going to suit your needs, ask your preferred choices some questions, including their idea of what constitutes a success and a failure. Ask about their methods for gathering and interpreting results. Make certain that you comprehend their strategies and techniques. You need to share the same strategies and beliefs as your real estate broker in order to work successfully with them.

One thing you should be clear about when purchasing or selling property is the amount of square footage that exists. When dealing with commercial square footage, it is important to know both the total square footage of the space as well as the usable square footage, which is determined to be the space where actual business takes place. It is a good idea to know measurements for each type of square footage. This will allow you to make decisions and speed up the process.

TIP! If you are looking to invest in an apartment complex, be mindful of the fact that smaller communities can pose more complexity than dealing with a larger one. Due to this, a lot of field experts advise avoiding any property with a single digit number of units.

As you can see, you do need to do your homework if you want to buy a commercial property, you need to put in some effort, and also hard work! You will also need to stick with it and not give up. Applying the useful advice of this article, you should be well prepared for a successful endeavor in commercial real estate.

Plumes across the Pacific deliver thousands of microbial species to West Coast

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

A surprising number of microorganisms ? 99 percent more kinds than had been reported in findings published just four months ago ? are leaping the biggest gap on the planet. Hitching rides in the upper troposphere, they're making their way from Asia across the Pacific Ocean and landing in North America. For the first time researchers have been able to gather enough biomass in the form of DNA to apply molecular methods to samples from two large dust plumes originating in Asia in the spring of 2011. The scientists detected more than 2,100 unique species compared to only 18 found in the very same plumes using traditional methods of culturing, results they published in July.

"The long-range transport and surprising level of species richness in the upper atmosphere overturns traditional paradigms in aerobiology," says David J. Smith, who recently earned his doctorate at the University of Washington in biology and astrobiology. He's lead author of a paper in the current issue of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

"It's a small world. Global wind circulation can move Earth's smallest types of life to just about anywhere," Smith said. It's been estimated that about 7.1 million tons (64 teragrams) of aerosols ? dust, pollutants and other atmospheric particles, including microorganisms ? cross the Pacific each year. The aerosols are carried by wind storms into the upper reaches of the troposphere. The troposphere, the layer of air closest to earth up to about 11 miles (18 kilometers), is where almost all our weather occurs.

Co-author Daniel Jaffe, professor at UW Bothell, has previously documented especially large plumes of aerosols in the troposphere making the trans-Pacific trip in seven to 10 days. The recent findings are based on two such plumes, one in April and the other in May of 2011, detected at Mount Bachelor in the Cascade Mountains of central Oregon.

Most of the microorganisms ? about half were bacterial and the other half fungal ? originated from soils and were either dead on arrival or harmless to humans. A few fungal species have been associated previously with crop wilt but scientists had no way of determining if any crops were affected during either plume event. Most of the species in the plumes can be found in low, background levels on the West Coast. The plumes, however, brought elevated levels of such organisms leading the scientists to say that it may be useful to think about microorganisms as air pollution: microorganisms that are unnoticed in background levels might be more relevant in concentrated doses.

"I was very surprised at the concentrations. One might expect the concentrations of cells to decrease with altitude based on fallout and dilution," Smith said. "But during these plume events, the atmosphere was pooling these cells just as it does with other kinds of air pollution."

Interestingly, Smith says, two of the three most common families of bacteria in the plumes are known for their ability to form spores in ways that they can hibernate safely during harsh conditions, making them especially well adapted to high altitude transport.

"I think we're getting close to calling the atmosphere an ecosystem," Smith said. "Until recently, most people would refer to it as a conveyor belt, or a transient place where life moves through. But the discovery of so many cells potentially able to adapt to traveling long distances at high altitudes challenges the old classification."

Cells also can interact with their high-altitude environment, for example, becoming the nucleus for rain drops and snow flakes and influencing the amount of precipitation that falls. Other scientists estimate that 30 percent of global precipitation stems from microbes.

On the other hand, scientists have yet to see evidence of metabolism or growth of microorganisms while aloft and there's a limited amount of time that any organism might reside there.

Sampling the upper troposphere for microorganisms in the past has been a spotty effort using aircraft and balloons, Smith said

"Because it is so difficult to get samples, I argue it's probably the last biological environment on the planet to be explored," he said.

Mount Bachelor, like many other mountains in the Cascades, has a peak tall enough to pierce the upper troposphere. Unlike other mountains in the Cascades, however, the top of Mount Bachelor is a far more accessible place for an observatory because a ski area exists there. There's power and bringing equipment and personnel to the observatory is not a major undertaking, you just take the ski lift.

HOW TO MAKE WHEAT PASTE

Want an organic adhesive that is easily removable? Here's a simple recipe to cook up wheat paste at home:

1. Boil 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil in a pot.

2. In a separate bowl, mix 3 table-spoons of flour with 10 teaspoons of water until it forms a runny mix.

3. Add the mixture to the boiling water and stir well for two minutes to prevent it from foaming up and overfilling the pan or becoming chunky.

4. Remove pot from heat and add 2 tablespoons of sugar (more for added strength) and allow it to cool.

5. Pour into a container and store for up to a week. Storage can be prolonged by refrigerating the mix.

Some artists pursue the creation of a timeless piece future generations will admire. Fans of local mural collective PPRWRK, however, are lucky if they see the same piece six months later.

About two years ago, photographer David Ruiz and his girlfriend, illustrator Mary Margaret LaVoie began converting their artwork into gigantic paper murals that they paste on downtown buildings.

Partly because of their contracts with the buildings' owners and partly because of their use of water-soluble wheat paste to apply them, the murals appear and disappear quickly, sometimes as quickly as a week after installation.

That impermanence is entirely the point, LaVoie says.

"For a lot of kids who don't necessarily get to go to art galleries or museums, they can walk down the street and see some art pop up and then go away and pop up somewhere else," the 31-year-old says. "I like the surprise element."

Ruiz and LaVoie make the wheat paste in their kitchen. Despite smelling like "just really crappy oatmeal," it offers an adhesive that is weather resistant but which can be cleanly removed with a pressure washer.

Building owners who might balk at approving more permanent artwork usually are amiable to a more temporary approach, they say.

"Sometimes, you don't want to look at something forever," says the 27-year-old Ruiz. "Gaining approval to have a permanent piece up is 10 times harder than what I do because you're stuck with it."

PPRWRK so far has installed about 25 large murals around town, including at the corner of Spears Avenue and Chambliss Street, inside JJ's Bohemia and at Red Bank High School. Ruiz and LaVoie also have installed murals as part of community events, including the 10x10 creative work showcase during this year's HATCH festival and NormalPalooza, which took place in November.

The duo's most recent -- and largest -- project was an installation for Mainx24 that took place Dec. 1 during the all-day celebration in Southside. The event was accompanied by a live performance by Strung Like a Horse and a 13-foot-image of the band's Mark the Fiddler with a raccoon's head was the centerpiece of the artwork.

Ruiz is a longtime photographer and founder of 423 Bragging Rights, a storehouse for event photography, especially of local concerts. As with all photos used in PPRWRK's murals, the pre-raccoon-ized picture used in the Mainx24 install was culled from his archives.

The seed for PPRWRK was planted in 2010, when LaVoie showed Ruiz a Technology, Entertainment and Design video of JR, a French street artist who pasted his photos murals around downtown Paris as a way of offering free art exhibits to the masses.

His pants still stained by the eight gallons of wheat paste used during the Mainx24 install, Ruiz says that, even if PPRWRK isn't following JR's formula to the letter, the video was inspiring.

"I love the idea of making a city a gallery instead of just [displaying it in] a building," he says. "Art should, for the most part, be free."

With the exception of a handful of LaVoie's illustrations, PPRWRK's murals are black and white and stand out in stark contrast to their brick and mortar canvasses.

The process of creating the murals is laborious, beginning with a computer render of the photo or illustration that is printed out, full size, on 11-inch-by-17-inch sheets of paper. These sheets, sometimes hundreds at a time, must be carefully cut out to maintain the piece's borders and arranged in a method that corresponds to the order of the installation.

Ruiz and LaVoie are seeking approval from businesses between Frazier Avenue and Main Street to display murals on their buildings next year as part of a citywide bicycle arts showcase called Tour de Noog.

Ruiz received a $5,000 MakeWork arts grant to fund the project, and the money will be used to purchase two runs of ink, a pressure washer, a ladder and a 36-inch wide printer that should increase efficiency by 60 percent, he says.

With it, the murals will go "from 400 sheets of paper to 30," Ruiz says. "That's outrageous. I can't wait to get it."

The first Tour de Noog installation will last from March through April and will feature murals made from Ruiz's photos of local musicians. A second installation will last from August through September and will use murals of LaVoie's illustrations.

Even knowing that these piece won't last, PPRWRK's artists said the payoff will be seeing the public reacting to art in a place they least expect to find it.

LaVoie, who has been drawing "since [she] could hold a crayon," has always loved making people smile with her pictures of animals. That's the same reaction she has sought through PPRWRK since their first project, a mural of one of her songbird drawings on the side of Chad's Records on Vine Street.

"I want them to smile and see that art can be anywhere," she says. "That's the thing about a city: Everyone has these walls that aren't doing much but holding buildings up. You might as well put some rock stars and some bright colors on it."

Biggest Is Not Always Best In Change Management Programmes ...

Written By: David Walton, Managing Director of Bestoutcome

There?s a school of thought among veterans of difficult change management projects that technology holds the key to success. The bigger the programme, the bigger the project management system you need, some would say.

But there are a number of reasons why these complex and costly systems can actually increase the risk of delay and budget over-runs, or in worst case, result in failure of an entire delivery.

First, some of the major project management systems are massively over-engineered. They include layers upon layers of esoteric functionality that is hardly ever used. If the system it too complex, there is a very real danger that they will end up serving as little more than glorified time recording systems, something that could be knocked-up in Excel in a few days.

Second, these big systems are old. They address change management and project management as if little or nothing had changed over the last 15 years. So many lessons have been learned and new techniques developed in recent times, but very little of this knowledge or new practice is evident in these dinosaur systems.

Third, big technology demands big resources. Complex systems require IT specialists ? sometimes lots of them ? to run and manage them. Not only does this create additional cost, it also creates an intellectual closed shop within a crucial component of the project management infrastructure. Given that openness, accuracy of data and transparency are the new watchwords of successful project management, this IT gatekeeper situation is completely counter-culture. Rather than managing risk, big systems create additional risk.

Fourth, big systems always end up costing far more than the vendors claim at the outset (which is a lot in the first place). Just ask anyone who has bought one!

Lastly, the complex technology employed by big systems gives a false comfort blanket to the sponsor and project team. Their sense of control and belief that the programme is on track exists only because the big complex project management system tells them so.

Change the only constant

It?s important to recognise that at the heart of successful change management is risk management. That means managing risk at every level throughout the programme ? i.e. from the bottom (such as the risk of key milestones being missed), right up to shareholder value at risk at any time during the course of the programme. This is crucial data which should be shared between the Project Sponsor and the CEO and ensures that the top people in the organisation are actively and fully engaged in the programme.

Furthermore many large corporates are by necessity in a constant state of change. They face pressures of regulation or governance changes, new technology that impacts on their market, changes forced on them from competitors, and many others. For this reason, change becomes a permanent characteristic of their business, which means that shareholder value is constantly at risk. And monitoring of this risk becomes essential.

Project risk management demands a toolset that can guarantee accuracy of data, openness, transparency and visibility at every level. It is therefore important that risks can be evaluated and escalated up the management tiers within a major change programme. Some risks can stay at a low level in a project as they will have limited impact if they ever do turn into issues.

Conversely, some risks need to be elevated to more senior levels because if these risks become issues then they can have a major impact on the wider programme or even the organisation itself.

Big toolsets are not good at identifying and monitoring these risks. What is needed is a more nimble project management system that enables you to see the wood from the trees, allowing different risks to be assessed and reviewed by different people.

Shareholder value risks should be reviewed by the Board and the CEO, whereas risks that are limited to the project should be dealt with by the project team and the sponsor. To be able to do this you need to have quick and easy access to a programme?s risk map at each and every level. In this iPad-dominated world, pages of printed risk tables simply do not cut it.

Big, traditional project management systems cannot be deployed in this way because they do not provide practical tools. And risk management ? these days ? is now the name of the game in project management.

Australian court: Worker's comp covers sex mishap

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? An Australian court has ruled that a bureaucrat who was injured while having sex on a business trip is eligible for worker's compensation benefits.

The Full Bench of the Federal Court ruled Dec. 13 in favor of the woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, and rejecting the appeal of the federal government's insurer.

The woman was hospitalized after being injured in 2007 during sex with a male friend while staying in a motel in the town of Nowra, 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of her hometown of Sydney.

During the sex, a glass light fitting was torn from its mount above the bed and landed on her face, injuring her nose and mouth. She later suffered depression and was unable to continue working for the government.

Her claim for worker's compensation for her physical and psychological injuries was initially approved by government insurer Comcare, then rejected after further investigation.

An administrative tribunal agreed with Comcare that her injuries were not suffered in the course of her employment, saying the government had not induced or encouraged the woman's sexual conduct. The tribunal also found the sex was "not an ordinary incident of an overnight stay" such as showering, sleeping and eating.

That ruling was overturned in the Federal Court in 2012, when Judge John Nicholas rejected the tribunal's findings that the sex had to be condoned by the government if she were to qualify for compensation.

"If the applicant had been injured while playing a game of cards in her motel room, she would be entitled to compensation even though it could not be said that her employer induced her to engage in such activity," Nicholas wrote in his judgment in favor of the woman receiving compensation.

In the Full Bench decision upholding Nicholas' decision, Judges Patrick Keane, Robert Buchanan and Mordy Bromberg agreed last week that the government's views on the woman having sex in her motel room were irrelevant.

"No approval, express or implied, of the respondent's conduct was required," they said.

It is not yet clear how much compensation the woman will receive. She was in her 30s at the time of the accident.

Comcare was on Monday considering an appeal to the High Court, Australia's highest legal authority, Comcare spokesman Russ Street said.

"The issue is a significant one," Street said in a statement. "Workers need to be clear about their entitlements and employers should have an understanding of their responsibilities and how to support their staff."

Jindal Gets it Wrong on Hormonal Contraceptives | AMAC, Inc.

By Jedediah Bila

In The Wall Street Journal last week, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal argued for the over-the-counter sale of oral contraceptives in the United States, no prescription required.

He writes:

As a conservative Republican, I believe that we have been stupid to let the Democrats demagogue the contraceptives issue and pretend, during debates about health-care insurance, that Republicans are somehow against birth control.

I agree with Jindal on one point: Conservatives and Republicans have allowed the Left to demagogue the issue of contraceptives. During the 2012 presidential campaign, the Left falsely painted many pro-contraception Republicans as anti-contraception, fueling the fabricated ?war on women? narrative. The same thing happened in 2008, when Sarah Palin was painted as an anti-contraception ?extremist,? despite her support for access to contraception.

However, winning the narrative on contraceptives should involve proper messaging and messengers, not turning hormonal contraceptives?with their many potentially serious side effects?into over-the-counter products.

Jindal writes:

Let?s ask the question: Why do women have to go see a doctor before they buy birth control? There are two answers. First, because big government says they should, even though requiring a doctor visit to get a drug that research shows is safe helps drive up health-care costs. Second, because big pharmaceutical companies benefit from it. They know that prices would be driven down if the companies had to compete in the marketplace once their contraceptives were sold over the counter.

Jindal ignores the reasons many women should?and do?see doctors before buying oral contraceptives. Birth control pills vary in chemical components. Each brand and/or formulation alters a woman?s chemical body composition differently and has the potential to affect one?s body and mind in a different way. Many women must go through numerous trial and error courses before finding a pill whose benefit outweighs its side-effect cost. In the process, one often has some serious side effects that can and should be monitored by a physician.

Also, many women seek out hormonal contraceptives to treat a wide range of physical ailments, not simply (or sometimes at all) for pregnancy prevention. A doctor?s input with respect to what pills have proven better than others at addressing patient-specific problems is highly valuable.

Hormonal contraceptives cannot and should not be likened to condoms. Condoms are an external barrier to disease and pregnancy. Hormonal contraceptives chemically alter a woman?s body. Potential side effects include anything from vomiting to depression to hair loss to a rise in blood pressure, among others. People with certain pre-existing conditions and/or habits?like a history of blood clots or smoking?may be discouraged by doctors from taking hormonal contraceptives because they may be potentially predisposed to serious risks.

Do you think kids wouldn?t more easily get their hands on over-the-counter contraceptives? I taught kids for years and assure you that many would. Do you think those same kids would always be diligent about reading warning labels and avoiding lifestyle habits that may increase the pill?s potential for serious side effects? Many would not.

Let me share some personal experience. I took hormonal contraceptives for medical reasons for eight years, beginning at the age of nineteen. It took me four rounds of different pills to find one that didn?t make me physically and/or emotionally sick to my stomach. I went through months of horrific side effects that were thankfully supervised by a doctor?s care. If I was careless and missed pills, I felt sick. With my doctor?s help, I finally found the right match, but it hadn?t been easy. My body and mind had been taxed.

Luckily, I was finally able to find nutritional ways to get my body on track without synthetic hormones, but my memory of those challenging days remains quite clear.

Jindal also writes:

Thanks to President Obama and the pro-choice lobby, women can buy the morning-after pill over the counter without a prescription, but women cannot buy oral contraceptives over the counter unless they have a prescription.

I would argue that no hormonally-loaded concoction (some morning-after pills are just that) should be administered as an over-the-counter, medically-unsupervised product. Two wrongs don?t make a right.

I appreciate Jindal?s desire to own the narrative on contraceptives, but this isn?t how you do it. Treating all hormonal contraceptives like a one-size-fits-all product and/or advocating the over-the-counter sale of dangerous hormonal concoctions isn?t the answer.

A wide range of doctor-prescribed medicines are not available over the counter for good reason. Hormonal contraceptives?and their potentially serious side effects?should not be taken lightly.

I support access to birth control pills, but am also aware from personal experience that these are serious drugs that alter one?s body chemistry. Shifting them to over-the-counter status could potentially have very dangerous consequences.

Top Canada court upholds anti-terrorism law in unanimous ruling

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's Supreme Court on Friday upheld an anti-terrorism law enacted after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, ruling unanimously that those who choose to engage in terrorism must "pay a very heavy price."

The law's constitutionality was challenged by Mohammad Momin Khawaja, convicted in Canada of terrorism for involvement with a British group that had plotted unsuccessfully to set off bombs in London.

It was also challenged by two men accused of terrorism by the United States for trying to buy missiles or weapons technology for the Sri Lankan Tamil Tigers.

The court rejected arguments that the law's definition of terrorism was overly broad. It upheld Khawaja's life sentence and confirmed the orders to extradite the other two to the United States.

Khawaja, a Canadian of Pakistani descent, was the first to be convicted under the law. He was sentenced in 2008 to 10-1/2 years in prison, and his sentence was then extended to life after appeal by the government.

The trial judge noted that Khawaja referred to Osama Bin Laden as "the most beloved person to me in the ... whole world, after Allah." He was found to have participated in a terrorism training camp in Pakistan and to have designed a device dubbed the "hi fi digimonster" for detonating bombs.

"The appellant was a willing participant in a terrorist group," Supreme Court Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin wrote in the 7-0 decision, adding that he was "apparently remorseless."

"He was committed to bringing death on all those opposed to his extremist ideology and took many steps to provide support to the group. The bomb detonators he attempted to build would have killed many civilians had his plans succeeded."

The law applies to any act committed for a political, religious or ideological purpose with the intention of intimidating the public by causing death or serious bodily harm, or substantial property damage, or causing serious interference with an essential service.

The court also ruled that Canada can proceed to extradite two men the United States has accused of involvement with the Tamil Tigers, which waged a bloody war for independence in Sri Lanka and is considered a terrorist organization by Washington and Ottawa.

The Canadian government declined to comment on when they would be extradited.

Piratheepan Nadarajah was alleged to have tried to purchase surface-to-air missiles and AK-47 assault rifles for the Tamil Tigers from an undercover officer posing as a black-market arms dealer on Long Island, New York.

The other man, Suresh Sriskandarajah, was alleged to have helped Tamil Tigers get electronic equipment, submarine and warship design software and communications equipment.

They surrendered to the government ahead of the court decision, their lawyers said.

BEYOND 'LEGITIMATE EXPRESSION'

The court disagreed that the federal law's terrorism provisions had put a chilling effect on Canadians' freedom of expression and was disproportionately broad.

"Only individuals who go well beyond the legitimate expression of a political, religious or ideological thought, belief or opinion, and instead engage in one of the serious forms of violence - or threaten one of the serious forms of violence - listed (in the law) need fear liability under the terrorism provisions of the Criminal Code," McLachlin wrote.

She quoted with approval the appeals court decision in the Khawaja case that faulted the Ottawa trial judge's sentence for failing to send a "clear and unmistakable message that terrorism is reprehensible and those who choose to engage in it will pay a very heavy price."

The original sentence of 10-1/2 years does "not approach an adequate sentence for such acts," she concluded.

Khawaja's lawyer, Lawrence Greenspon, said it was a "terrible day" for his client and said too often people were investigated or prosecuted for their religious or political beliefs.

"It's a ... very unfortunate ruling for minorities in this country, and we're extremely disappointed with the result," he told reporters in the foyer of the Supreme Court.

Justice Minister Rob Nicholson said the decision was important as Canada was not immune to the threat of terrorism. "The court sent a strong message that terrorism will not be treated leniently in Canada," he said.

The cases are Mohammad Momin Khawaja v. Her Majesty the Queen. (Ont) (34103); Suresh Sriskandarajah v. United States of America, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada (34009), Piratheepan Nadarajah v. United States of America, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada (34013).

More Snow Could Mean Less Ice for Antarctic

Increased snowfall that's expected in Antarctica as the climate warms is likely to send more ice into the sea, new research finds. The effect is so strong that additional sea-level rise caused by extra snowfall is greater than the rise caused by extra heat melting the ice directly.

The new study comes shortly after a recent analysis found that ice melt in Greenland and Antarctica has contributed nearly a half-inch to sea-level rise since 1992. Antarctic ice sheets once thought protected from melting are also more vulnerable than expected, researchers reported in May.

Antarctica's response to climate change has always been uncertain, in part because a warming atmosphere can hold more moisture than a cooler one. More moisture is expected to bring more snow to Antarctica, which could potentially offset the melting of ice caused by warmer air and ocean water.

Now, that offset doesn't look so likely. Ricarda Winkelmann and her colleagues at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany used computer modeling to look at how the Antarctic would respond to various climate-warming scenarios. They found that greater snowfall actually enhances ice loss rather than offsetting it.

"Our simulations under future climate scenarios show that between 30 percent and 65 percent of the ice gain from enhanced snowfall are compensated by an increase of ice loss," Winkelmann told LiveScience.

The reason: When snow falls, it increases the elevation of the land or ice it falls on. In Antarctica, snow falling on the floating ice shelves weighs them down, making them sink more heavily in the water. The land doesn't have that type of elasticity, so the same amount of snowfall on the landmass of Antarctica causes 10 times the elevation change as on floating ice.

The result is a steep slope from land to ice, the natural equivalent of a Slip 'n Slide for Antarctica's ice. Ice flows faster from the continent toward the sea, resulting in sea-level rise. [Ice World: Gallery of Awe-Inspiring Glaciers]

How bad this is depends on how warm the world gets. The researchers used several scenarios based on how much extra warmth Earth will hang onto with different concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The least dire is an extra 2.6 Watts per square meter by 2100, while the worst scenario is an extra 8.5 Watts per square meter by that time. The researchers estimate that in a 2.6 Watts/square meter scenario, Antarctic ice will cause the equivalent of 0.26 feet (0.08 meters) in sea-level rise thanks to extra snowfall. In the worst-case scenario, the sea-level rise jumps to 1.8 feet (0.56 m).

Those numbers are between 100 percent and 200 percent of the ice loss caused by surface and ocean warmth combined, Winkelmann said. By 2500, ice loss caused by snowfall in the warmest scenario could hit 4 feet (1.45 m).

Despite the fact that these findings hold along the entire Antarctic coast, there is still lots of uncertainty about Antarctica's future, Winkelmann said.

"We need to make further steps towards a full assessment of sea-level rise ? globally and locally," she said.

Affiliate Internet Marketing ? Increase Revenue and ... - Business

Affiliate Internet Marketing to increase revenue or as a customer acquisition strategy is not as easy as it looks. Talk with some of the sales people for any of the major affiliate networks online, and they will cause you to assume that all it takes is setting up an account, creating some banners and inventive collateral, and sit back and see the latest sales stream come in. Those same reps really aren?t focusing much on trying to ensure that you know that you?ll need to invest any where from a couple hundred dollars to a couple of thousand dollars In order to get started. They probably also aren?t to thrilled about making sure you are aware that even when you don?t generate even one sale, you will always pay monthly ?service fees? to them together with their commissions. Let?s cover some Internet Affiliate Marketing guidelines to help you boost your revenue and obtain more customers.

1. If this were simply, many businesses would be a million dollar Company!

Re-read that sentence and understand it. There aren?t any quick fixes to web marketing! Especially when you are looking for Affiliate Marketing where you?re liable for managing and monitoring 100?s or 1000s of Affiliate Webmasters. Affiliate Internet Marketing requires effort and attention. There won?t be any ?set it and forget it? methods.

2. If you don?t convert your current web site traffic into clients, Internet Marketing most definately will not help.

Affiliate webmasters are traffic sources. They are simply displaying your banner ad campaigns or text links with their audience of clients. Once that consumer clicks through to your website, it is your JOB to change them to a sale! Over my decade of practical experience I?ve worked with countless Brands and business owners who don?t seem to see this simple concept! Your website is your brand?s ?home.? That?s the place where all of your current website traffic is routed to. You as the business person are responsible for knowing what the conversion rate is of your respective website, what it?s most popular goods are, which squeeze pages would be the most beneficial, and who your target customer is. If you have this knowledge, congratulations! You just might be able to pursue Affiliate Marketing Online.

3. A physical object is still, , stays still?

In the event that you?ve done your homework, consulted with the Affiliate Marketing Online professional, and sense that it is time to invest in growing your online revenue through affiliate marketing. Those big affiliate services which I mentioned can be extremely important resources. First you should be conscious of how affiliate internet marketing works from just one of the affiliate webmasters! Affiliate webmasters will make a profit. Period. Each man and woman that survived every one of the changes to affiliate marketing over time, are generally pretty savvy online marketing pros themselves. The very first thing they are going to do is take a look at selling statistics. They need to know when your last commission-able sale was, what your EPC (sales per 100 orders), along with what your return rate is. However , if you are just beginning, you don?t have much information available. TIP: Pad the stats. Make an affiliate webmaster account for yourself within the same service that you are a merchant. Sign up for your own personal program. So let?s assume for example you regularly distribute newsletters with special deals for your clients via E-Marketing. Instead of just directing customers straight to your blog, funnel them through the newly obtained affiliate webmaster account. When potential clients are looking at your stats to see if they want to promote you, at least you have got some statistical data that could entice them.

4. Watch the ball closely.

Brand dilution is among the biggest problems I have come across through the years from business owners that don?t really understand how affiliate webmasters get the job done. You will have to have specific restrictions and guidelines occur on your account that outlines what affiliate webmasters are permitted to do online when promoting your internet business. One example is, if you do not specify SEM guidelines, they might actually be bidding against you to advertise your own product. Or they may be creating fake Social Networking profiles to advertise your Brand. Even worse, they might be spamming subscriber lists with your Brand or website address! All of these things have to be assessed to ensure that your Brand or company name isn?t being misrepresented. Talk to a qualified online Brand Management Expert for advice in case you have questions. Also a quick phone call could help you save hassles in the future!

5. The easiest method to grow Internet Affiliate Marketing is to increase own Affiliates.

There are millions of blog owners and social websites activists that don?t even know what internet affiliate marketing is! They are the younger generation of webmasters and bloggers that could have first been shown the world wide web far after affiliate marketing online had its heyday! Find men and women, and start to forge an association with them. You in turn become the expert in internet marketing and affiliate marketing online within their eye, and remember that, their loyalty will lie with you! You are effectively creating your very own little army of online brand ambassadors.

Windows Phone 7.8 for the Nokia Lumia 510, 800 starts lurking on NaviFirm

Windows Phone 78 for the Lumia 510, 800 starts lurking on NaviFirm

The appearance of new Nokia firmware on NaviFirm is already enough to pique the interest of owners jonesing for an update, and this time there's especially strong reasons to get fired up: Windows Phone 7.8 upgrades for both the Lumia 510 and 800 have appeared on the servers. While their presence doesn't represent an official rollout, it supports notions that Nokia is edging closer to a deployment and gives those who live dangerously a chance to try 7.8 for themselves. We can't guarantee that phones will survive any unofficial transplants, but we'd love to hear from risk-takers who find something truly new in Microsoft's not-quite-8 release.

Hockey fans fed up with ongoing NHL labor strife

Sitting in a hockey locker room, Steve Chase became the latest die-hard fan fed up with the NHL lockout.

Living in Los Angeles, Chase believed the league had squandered all the goodwill built in the area after the Kings won the Stanley Cup. His weekly pickup games with friends became his only taste of the sport he loved because of the ongoing labor strife that has dragged on for months.

So he took a poll of his buddies, then took a pledge:

"We're not coming back."

Not for good. Just not after the lockout is settled, not for a while.

Chase started the grass roots "Just Drop It" campaign that encourages fans to boycott one NHL game for every game canceled after Dec. 21st. No tickets, no TV, no merchandise ? not a minute or a penny spent on the league, punishment for what he believed are continued abuses of loyalty on their fan base.

He made a video and started a Facebook page, urging fans to click the "like" button and join the cause. More than 11,000 angry fans have joined since the weekend, a puck drop in the circle compared to the millions of fans who attend games, but the latest small sign fans won't again be easily won back.

"People are trying to crush the NHL," Chase said. "That's not our goal. Our goal is just to get hockey back. Hopefully somebody, somewhere cares about this and decides, 'Guys, we've got to get back and talk.' The fans are right.

"They're fighting over our money."

The days of letter writing and 30-second phone calls to sports radio stations have ballooned to steady streams of hashtags, Facebook posts and homemade videos from fans who just want to come in from the cold of this labor battle and watch their slap shots and saves. They are exasperated over a work stoppage with no end in sight and little regard for the fans.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby understood why fans are upset over the third lockout in Commissioner Gary Bettman's 20-year tenure.

"I don't blame anyone for being frustrated with this process," Crosby said. "Everyone's got to be frustrated with the way this has gone. It's pretty easy for everyone involved to feel that way."

Kind of like they sing in a song about union executive director Donald Fehr's old sport, some fans vow it's one, two, three lockouts and they're out.

"I wouldn't blame them if they did that by any stretch," Penguins forward Craig Adams said, "but I can't predict that."

It's actually pretty easy to call this shot.

For all the angry tweets, texts, threats and organized campaigns, fans will still pick up the remote and print out tickets as soon as the strife ends.

They always do. In every sport. Remember 1994? After the World Series was wiped out, baseball loyalists vowed never to return to the old ball game. Fueled by super-sized sluggers and retro ballparks, attendance topped 60 million in 1996, 70 million in 1998 and soared to 79,503,175 in 2007.

The NHL, of course, can't match those numbers. But the story arc is still the same. The NHL drew 20,854,169 fans when the sport returned in 2005-06 ? 497,970 more than the total in 2003-04, the season before the lockout.

The NHL saw an attendance uptick each of the next three seasons and totaled a record 21,468,121 fans in 2011-12.

Fans are filling stadiums from A (Air Canada) to X (Xcel Energy) and most geographic points in between. If there are fans still holding out over the lost season and refusing to step foot inside an NHL arena, they're at least throwing on their oversized Winter Classic sweaters and watching from home.

The 2004 Stanley Cup finals between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Calgary Flames averaged 3.286 million viewers on ABC/ESPN, the Nielsen company said. Those numbers actually dipped in 2006 and 2007 when Carolina and Anaheim, two nontraditional hockey markets, won the Cup.

When hockey-mad cities like Pittsburgh, Detroit, Philadelphia and Chicago all reached the finals, though, the ratings soared. The Blackhawks-Flyers series in 2010 on NBC/Versus averaged 5.167 million viewers, the highest for the finals since 2002, Nielsen said.

The NHL is coming off its sixth consecutive year of record revenue, with a projection of more than $3.2 billion by the end of the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs, the league said.

Don't forget, the NHL has a $2 billion, 10-year deal with NBC Sports Group through the 2020-21 season.

"Our fan support coming back last time was outstanding and we were probably a little bit surprised to see how good it was," Adams said. "That speaks to how much the fans love the game."

The NHL clearly caught some breaks coming out of the last lockout.

The league marketed its comeback around rising stars like Crosby and Washington's Alex Ovechkin. They added fan-friendly shootouts and the New Year's Day Winter Classic. The league made the two-line pass legal to help bust up the neutral-zone trap and created chic commercials to appeal more toward casual fans.

This time ? whenever the lockout ends ? the league might be all out of tricks. They'll need to dig. And it could take years to recover from the wreckage.

Some teams are trying to keep their brand alive among an increasingly uninterested public. The Flyers aired classic games and brought back former stars for autograph signings at a sports bar in the same complex as the Wells Fargo Center.

Gerry Helper, special assistant to the president and senior vice president for the Nashville Predators, said the team enjoyed their best season ticket renewal year in franchise history this past offseason.

The Predators have stayed aggressive in developing benefits packages for season ticketholders during the work stoppage. They organized "Preds Pride Day" activities and something called a "Smashmob" for a youth hockey game last month where they brought their public address announcer and mascot, and created a Predators' game-like atmosphere. Helper wrote in an email to The AP the Predators have stayed in touch with season ticket holders via email and phone.

Not every Predators fan feels appreciated. Tom Begley, of Franklin, Tenn., canceled the two season tickets he has held since Day 1 of the franchise. He also estimated approximately 1,000 people like himself are season-ticket holders from the first day. He said the team has done plenty of events for all season-ticket holders, but nothing special for that select group.

"I got not even a phone call from the Predators just to say, 'Look we know you're a loyal die-hard season-ticket holder from Day 1. Why don't you come down and do something at the arena?'" he said. "Hey, if I feel like it down the line and I want to buy tickets again I can do it. Right now, I don't know. I'm not convinced that hockey here in Nashville is going to be viable long-term. I am scared to death of what Donald Fehr is doing to the game and it's a shame. It really is."

In Pennsylvania, the government is getting involved in the messy dispute.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey on Wednesday urged the U.S. Small Business Administration to provide additional assistance to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia businesses that have been adversely affected by the lockout. Casey claimed small business in Pittsburgh are losing nearly half of the $2.1 million in revenue generated for each Penguins home game. He wrote Philadelphia is losing $1 million in revenue from each lost home game.

All the bluster of a boycott is easier tweeted than done. Fans can't quit Sid the Kid, Ovi, Big Z, The Warden, Phil the Thrill and The Doaner.

On Opening Night in January 2013 or October 2013 or November 2015, whenever, the teams will be back ready for the first faceoff.

So will the fans.

At least some of them.
